Today was that rarest of days in Washington -- a comfortable sunny day in August -- so I decided to go into town just to wander around. I noticed something I had never seen before. On top of a Metrobus stopped at a light was some sort of device with a light that just went back and forth, like a Cylon eye from the original version of "Battlestar Galactica". Has that been there all the time?

The Olympics have rolled around again, and I have to confess that I have practically no interest in watching them. I'll probably end up sprawled over the couch watching some of the events anyway, but it's always the same thing every four years. There's the story of the athlete who was seriously ill or injured, but who courageously fought back to recover and compete in the Games. Then there's the story of the athlete who's mother/father/sister/brother is gravely ill, and whose dying wish is to see said athlete win a medal at the Games. And then there are all the other human interest stories that frankly don't interest me at all. (I'm becoming increasingly grouchy in my old age.) But every time that's what gets on TV, and if we're lucky, the network might not edit out all the non-Americans in any given event to make more room for the human interest stories.

That's enough about the Olympics, which is just an excuse for me to link to my favorite Olympic story of all time.

Yes, it's been a while yet again, but my excuse is a combination of too much work, a little bit of vacation time on the road, general malaise and the lack of anything interesting to say. Sure, that usually doesn't stop me, but there you are.
